Iraqi and Kurdish troops make gains in battle

Summary

Iraqi government troops and Kurdish fighters launched their push towards Mosul in the early hours of Monday. Mosul is second-largest city of Iraq.
Kurdish tank units advanced from the east and they are within 300m of IS positions. The Kurds seized several villages in the first few hours of the operation.
Iraqi government troops and Kurdish fighters are operating from Qayyarah airbase, which was recaptured in August. The main assault is being led by Iraqi army troops. Elite Iraqi counterterrorism forces are expected to join in the coming days.
IS militants overran there because its capture became a symbol of the group’s rise as a major force and its ability to control territory.
Even if IS is driven out of Mosul, the group will still control areas of northern and eastern Iraq.

Opinion

In Japan, the sectarian disputes seldom happen. Japanese believe in the many kinds of religions:Buddhism, Christianity Shintoism. Almost Japanese don’t persist in specific religion. However, they often go to a shrine to pray for happy, health and success. It becomes their tradition. The religion exists as one of the customs of their life in Japan.
Such as Japanese’s thinking against religion shows that Japanese have a great acceptability. In Edo Period, when Japan was needed to open a country, Japanese cultures and skills could not develop exponentially without their acceptability. At that time, quite a lot of information was flew in Japan. They had a very hard time to assimilate the cultures of foreign countries. However, they had the acceptability, they could flexibly respond to changes or expansion.
Persisting in something is good but attitude of permissiveness like this is also important.

Oscars push for more gender and ethnical diversity

Summary

The organizers of the Oscars have invited a record number of new members to vote in next year’s Academy Awards, in response to criticism of a luck of diversity at this year’s ceremony. The members are mostly white, male and over 60. The percentage of male membership is nearly 80 and white is over 90. There are currently more than 6000 members of the academy. Almost half the people who have been asked to join are women and almost as many are people of colour. For the second year in a row, all of acting nominees at February’s 88th Academy Awards were white, sparking an outcry. The protests led to an unprecedented debate about racial equality in the film industry.
Opinion

That’s news to me that there are a racial discrimination and a sexual discrimination even in the film industry. Women and colors are often discriminate in their places of work, for the types of job and salaries. The film industry places the importance at actors’ and actresses’ ability, so it seem unaffected by such a discrimination. But there are. The efforts of the organizers of the Oscars is nice idea. It is because the tendency of this world has been to decrease the gap between male and female, white and color and so on. I hope that the day the people who live in this world will be possible to evaluate each other without considering their differences will come someday.

Final essay:Hard work pays off

“Hard work pays off.” This is a quote by an unknown author, and is a phrase many prominent people have used in their speeches in the past. This is a saying that I have always believed, and had been my motivation whenever I had to overcome challenges in my life. I believe this way, from my own two experiences in the past.

Firstly, hard work preparing for my high school entrance exam paid off. To get into the Keio Girls High School, the very school that I have always wanted to get into, I had to study really hard. During my three years at junior high school, I devoted myself into the preparation; I went to cram schools, and studied until late at night everyday at home. I also sacrificed my vacation into studying. Although studying was not my thing, by setting a specific goal, and with my teachers always cheering me up, and my friends reaching for the same goal, I was able to try very hard. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to make the best out of it. What’s more, I wouldn’t have been here as a sophomore at Keio University as I am now.

Secondly, hard work trying to improve my Squash skills paid off. I joined Squash club last April, and that was when I first stared playing Squash. Although I was just a beginner and couldn’t play it very well. I started to find joy in the very tactic sport and felt desperate to be better. I practiced hard, doing self training up to five times a week on some occasions, trying to achieve techniques for various playing styles and methods. With my seniors supporting and teaching me, I was able to improve my skills and was given a chance to play at the Inter college competition, which was my ultimate goal ever since I joined the club.

Keeping this words in my heart, had always lead me to grasp a chance and achieve a goal. Sometimes, there are times when things just don’t go the way you imagine. However, by believing that the hard work we’re doing now will surely pay off someday and continuing to make that effort, luck will always be with us. These experiences of overcoming my challenges will always be in my mind, and will always be my confidence when I face a difficulty in my future life.

Carmakers cheated the test

Summary

Last month, Suzuki said it found “discrepancies” in its fuel emissions testing, but denied it was cheating. Then, because of its wrong, Suzuki’s shares came down 3percent to 2 percent on Tokyo stock exchange. Recently, earlier this year Japan’s transport ministry raided the offices of Mitsubishi Motors, after the carmaker admitted to falsifying its fuel economy data. Last year, Volkswagen in Germany also cheated the software in its diesel vehicles.

Opinion

Not only Suzuki but also other companies cheated its fuel emissions test and installing softwares. If do that, there is some benefit for them. However, the safety of people who use that cars is not protected. It is too late that happened an accident. The customers believe in the quality of products and use them, so the companies must have a responsibility for keeping the safety of the customers. It is more important for the companies to make products thinking of customers than to make a profit. Like this company is able to become a “good” company.

Kenya building collapse

Summary

ln Kenya, on February 29th, happend collapses of buildings and at least 42 people were died. Many of houses are substandard or built on unsafe grounds. On that day, the six-storey building collapsed. According to a local Military Police, it was built less than 5m from a river, when it should have been at least 30m away. The National Construction Authority said it had marked the buildings as unfit for habitation, but that the local government had failed to follow up to national government. In Nairobi, a lot of people live in low-income areas or slums. So, housing is in high demand, but unscrupulous developers often bypass regulations. They are need to improve rules and ways of constructions.

Opinion

What can Japan do for Kenya? I think Japan should send people to Kenya, and help to build new houses. But, not only sending people but also teaching ways of buildings to people there. In Japan, earthquakes often occurs. So, Japan has a lot of advanced skills of resistant buildings. And  it is effective that raising funds and send clothes and food. The local government should follow up the saying of the national government to protect people safe. If do so, the local government may be able to get the subsidy from the national government. The standard of living of  people in Kenya will raise.
