New organ donation system starts in Wales

Summary

According to the article, the revolutionary organ donation law that people will be automatically regarded as donors unless  they opt out was enforced in Wales.  In UK, as many as 224 people including children are on a wating list.

As the ratio of donors went up 34% of the population because of  this law, Health Minister Mark Drakeford applauds and expects it as a beginning of reformation whitch aims to increase the number of  donors by 25%. On the other hand, Scotland and Northern Ireland are wary in imitating the system.

Opinion

I had an impression that there was a risk in the ‘revolutionary’ law.  Certainly, this law will make the number of donors increase, and it will contribute to the whole society. But it might be invading individuals’ judgement. For example, not a few people won’t be aware of the enforcement, it means there’s no opportunity to think whether or not they opt out. And it  will unilaterally force ‘minorities’ to carry out administrative procedures and submit in the piece of their private information.

the possibility of ‘bio fabrication’

In the video, the speaker pointed out killing animals to make products consumed by human would be devastating. As the world population increases, the necessary scale of animals will step up. As the result, it will degrade our lives and environment. Therefore, he stressed the importance of spreading a new technology ‘bio fabrication’.

In my opinion, the idea has a critical problem. It’s an economic efficiency.I think meat or leather produced by bio fabrication must be much more expensive than that made by a meat processing factory, and the amount of products must be less. Therefore, though it can be helpful for every person, ironically only rich people who are far from starvation can afford it. In other words, the technology itself is limited to them.

But I also think it is actually effective to improve the food-supply in developing countries like Africa. As we know, a huge amount of crops are used to raise livestock in rich countries. So if the bio fabrication allows to produce meat without feed, a market price of crops goes down, and developing countries will be able to buy them with their precious foreign currency. I think this technology would narrow the inequality between these nations.

In the conclusion, bio fabrication is, connecting the result, effective for the world.I think that all developed countries must take responsibility to adapt the technology and some economic burden in order to mend food- supply or environment all over the world. People in those countries also should make effort to buy meat or leather products produced by the bio fabrication, from the viewpoint of fair between the rich and the poor.

The ad featuring a thin model banned

summary

The advertisement featuring a thin model has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority. Because it was considered ‘irresponsible’ according to the rule.

Such kind of ad has been controversial in the region where thin models are featured on ads.

Some people say  that a very slender looks of models affect values or ideals, and can lead to eating disorders.

they also add that  the problem is how these models are used, not whether they are healthy.

opinion

I thought the rule arranged by the authority is dangerous because it would violate freedom of speech and freedom of business.

At first,  The use of words of the rule is too obscure. What is ‘visible’ or ‘prominent’ can be easily changed according to people’s values. Therefore advertisers can’t predict  whether their expression is ok,  they will tend to refrain from publishing.

And second, the loss posed by a ban is ennormous. If the rule is concrete and find it necessary to stop the ad,  it should exercise an administrative guidance first. I think banning must be the last way.

The biggest world heritage is in danger!

Summary

The Great Wall, known as the world heritage in China is in danger mainly due to natural erosion and human damage.

It was mainly built in Ming period between 14th and 17th centuries and its total length is about 21000 km.

But about 2000 km of the ancient fortification has disappeared. In addition to it, only about 8.2 percent of the Great Wall is in good condition according to a 2014 survey.

Though the increased number of tourists visiting the Great Wall is accelerating its damage nowadays, the local heritage departments is not enough to protect the site.

Opinion

As the Great Wall is one of the biggest world heritage, it is too much for one local, gubernatorial institution to improve the situation.

In my opinion, tourists should pay attention to the crisis situation first.  I think if they are aware of it, they will try to enjoy a scenery within the designated areas, and avoid getting involved in ‘unfair’ trades done by thefts.

For that, the local heritage departments should firstly deepen their awareness by publicizing the information.

Town of Ensenada covered with ash of Chile’s Calbuco volcano

[summary]

According to the article we discussed, Calbuco volcano in Chile erupted twice last week, and it spewed 210 million cubic meters  of ash.

The effect of eruption is so serious that the ash endangered a number of homes and businesses and forced more than 6000 people to evacuate.

To makes matters worse, if the ash includes moisture by rain, there is some possibility of destroying more buildings.

In response to this disaster, the Chilean government has deployed soldier to help with the clean-up and decided to provide aid to financial losses of local farmers.

[opinion]

I was so surprised to realize the way the eruption influences people’s lives. I think it will be important for Chilean government to improve its doctrine or technologies to predict and minimize the effect of further eruptions in order to save people.

For example, the new building code must be adopted to prevent home s from collapsing. New buildings should be strong enough to endure the weight of ash.

Moreover, in the areas where damage was serious, I think the govern ment should revise city planning. It must make effort to assure sufficient distance between houses allowing people to evacuate quickly in case of eruption.
