Columbia’s first legal euthanasia case

<Summary>

Today we discussed a controversial topic, euthanasia. Recently Ovidio Gonzalez suffering from terminal throat cancer and unbearable pain became the first case of being performed euthanasia in Columbia. Assisted suicide was approved by Constitutional Court in1990s that means euthanasia is legitimated. But any measures have not been voted by Congress and only a set of guidelines for hospital were issued by the health ministry in May. Furthermore Roman Catholic Church that has predominant position in this country said euthanasia is morally unacceptable.

<Opinion>
I think euthanasia should be approved because choosing to die by him/herself is one of the fundamental human rights. People have rights to do anything as long as they don’t annoy other people or invade other people’s rights. Therefore suicide is thought to be one of these rights because killing themselves is basically harmless to others. Hence, euthanasia should also be permitted legally. On the contrary if the government prohibits someone who suffers from severe pain from committing suicide and forces him/her to continue to live, it would be invasion of his/her fundamental human rights because this means government torments him/her indirectly. Some might say that euthanasia is a kind of murder by doctors. But this insistence pays too much attention to the formality that is a surface of the problem. The essence is who decides to kill. Therefore except religious reasons there would be no grounds for banning euthanasia.
